Ecosystem science for humans.
This research group, part of the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service at Ohio University, works to advance both the theoretical development and direct implementation of (i) alternative energy systems and (ii) integrative ecosystems service management. We currently study novel fertilizers and perennial grasses in temperate regions, CAM plants in semi-arid regions, and wastes as feedstocks that can be incorporated in multiple systems to reduce overall environmental impacts from agriculture, energy, and waste management.
Agriculture, Renewable Energy, Forests, and Science Communication.
Our research is all about working toward more sustainable solutions for energy and land management. We train leaders in environmental science to resolve models and demonstrate technologies that have positive environmental, social, and economic impacts. We look forward to a future with resilient agriculture and energy systems that are built on ecological knowledge.
We work in partnership with other organizations.
In partnership with Rural Action, and with funding from the Sugar Bush Foundation and Ohio EPA, we evaluate the potential for reducing impacts from poorly maintained septic systems. Learn more: ruralaction.org/septicsolutions
In partnership with Florida Institute of Technology, with funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF), we evaluate hydrochar from digestate.
In partnership with Jackie O’s Brewery, and with funding from USDA, NSF, and the US EPA, we evaluate biogas generation from organic wastes.
